Hamamatsu Chusen x Enshu Cotton Kitaya Shoten Tenugui
A collaboration of Hamamatsu's traditional techniques!
Enshu Momen (Enshu Cotton) is a traditional cotton fabric made in the Enshu region (western region of Shizuoka Prefecture).
It is a warm cotton fabric with warm colors inspired by Japan's four seasons, and the more water passes through it, the more comfortable it becomes in your hands.
During the Edo period, it became popular as a winter job or side job for farmers, and became ingrained in people's daily lives as daily wear. By the mid-Showa period, the name had spread throughout the country, and Enshu became one of Japan's three major cotton textile producing regions, along with Mikawa (eastern part of Aichi Prefecture) and Senshu (southwestern part of Osaka Prefecture).
The tenugui we are introducing this time has warm vertical striped cotton, and the borders (horizontal stripes) are dyed using Hamamatsu Chusen by Kei Morimoto of Kitaya Shoten, which is popular for its chusen tenugui."Chuzome is a method of dyeing where a stencil is placed on the fabric, and dye is poured over it, resulting in the fabric being dyed equally on both sides. The bleeding and shading effects are unique charms of this handcrafted technique."
The border on each stripe makes it pop! Cotton pongee tenugui, which are thicker than regular tenugui, can be used for a variety of purposes, including everyday use, interior decoration such as tapestries and placemats, everyday use, and making small items.
